Prof. Raghavarao has made pioneering contributions in food process engineering, downstream processing, membrane separations, enzyme technology, bioseparations, and industrial biotechnology. His research has consistently focused on converting laboratory innovations into scalable industrial technologies, with more than 25 major technologies developed and several successfully commercialized.
His current research interests span advanced separation processes, membrane-based purification systems, extraction and recovery of high-value biomolecules, enzyme-assisted processing, sustainable food manufacturing, process intensification, and circular bioeconomy approaches. His work also focuses on the recovery of bioactive compounds, proteins, nutraceuticals, and functional ingredients from agricultural and food processing streams, supporting waste valorisation and resource-efficient production.
A major part of his recent research explores integrated bioprocess design, scale-up of food and fermentation technologies, green processing methods, and engineering solutions for next-generation food systems. His contributions have significantly impacted areas such as virgin coconut oil processing, natural product extraction, biopolymer separation, and industrial bioproduct development.
Prof. Raghavarao received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the International Association of Engineering and Food in 2023 in Nantes, France, along with prestigious honors including the NASI-Reliance Award, VASVIK Award, and fellowships from major Indian science and engineering academies.
