We are pleased to announce Dr. Cristina L.M. Silva as a Speaker at the Trends in Food Science and Emerging Technologies – An International Conference (TFoSET), taking place from November 25–27, 2026, in Prague, Czech Republic.
Dr. Silva is an Associate Professor at the Escola Superior de Biotecnologia da Universidade Católica Portuguesa (ESB), Universidade Católica Portuguesa – Centro Regional do Porto, Portugal, and a researcher at the CBQF – Centre for Biotechnology and Fine Chemistry. Her work spans food engineering, food processing, modelling, and the integration of innovative technologies into food systems and education.
Digital Twins are emerging as powerful tools for transforming food manufacturing by integrating mathematical modelling, sensor data, artificial intelligence, and real-time process monitoring. Their potential extends from process optimization and predictive quality assessment to energy efficiency, traceability, shelf-life prediction, and intelligent decision support.
However, applying Digital Twins to food systems presents unique challenges. Unlike more standardized engineering sectors, food materials are highly complex and variable, making accurate modelling and prediction particularly demanding. Dr. Silva’s work examines these challenges through examples involving thermal processing, drying, fermentation, shelf-life prediction, and sustainable food processing systems.
A key focus of her research is the future of Food Engineering education. As the food sector undergoes digital transformation, future food engineers will need to combine traditional engineering expertise with new competencies in data interpretation, mathematical modelling, systems thinking, computational methods, and AI-assisted decision-making.
Cristina’s work emphasizes that digital transformation should complement, not replace, the strong scientific foundations of Food Engineering. Preparing professionals for the next generation of food systems will require a balanced approach that connects physical food processes with digital intelligence.
Join us at TFoSET 2026 to explore how Digital Twins could help create more intelligent, sustainable, predictive, and adaptive food systems, and how education must evolve to prepare the food engineers of tomorrow.
