Session III — Vaccines, Immunity and Biomarkers

Day 1 continues with Session III, focusing on vaccines, immunity and biomarkers, important areas of research in the prevention, diagnosis and control of tuberculosis.
Prof. Bavesh Davandra Kana is affiliated with the University of the Witwatersrand and the National Health Laboratory Service in South Africa, where he leads the DSI/NRF Centre of Excellence for Biomedical Tuberculosis Research. His research focuses on tuberculosis, including the development of new approaches for TB treatment and research into mycobacterial biology and disease mechanisms.
His presentation at the conference, “Harnessing Peptidoglycan Amidation to Engineer a Better TB Vaccine,” explores peptidoglycan amidation in the context of tuberculosis vaccine research. Peptidoglycan is an important component of the mycobacterial cell envelope and has also been investigated as a potential area for identifying new targets and understanding mycobacterial biology.
As chair of Session III, Prof. Kana contributes to discussions bringing together research perspectives on TB vaccines, host immunity and biomarkers, highlighting the breadth of scientific approaches being explored to address tuberculosis.
