We are pleased to announce that Dr. Richard Anthony, Scientist in the TB Group at the RIVM National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (The Netherlands), will be a featured speaker at the 2nd International Virtual Conference on Frontiers in TB & Mycobacteriology.
Dr. Anthony is an expert in molecular epidemiology and genomic surveillance of tuberculosis, with extensive experience applying whole genome sequencing (WGS) to unravel transmission dynamics and inform public health interventions. His current research focuses on integrating high-resolution genomic data with epidemiological and clinical information to better understand TB outbreaks, transmission networks, and population-level patterns.
In this presentation, Dr. Anthony will explore how WGS transformed TB epidemiology by enabling precise identification of clustered cases and transmission links. He will discuss both the power and limitations of genomic data, highlighting how large volumes of sequencing information can reveal meaningful patterns while also introducing complexity and “noise.” The talk will address key challenges in interpreting genomic clusters, distinguishing recent transmission from historical spread, and translating genomic insights into actionable public health strategies. His work provides critical guidance for leveraging precision epidemiology to strengthen TB control and surveillance in real-world settings.
