This session at the 2nd International Virtual Conference on Staphylococci and Staphylococcal Infections (February 23β24, 2026) will highlight cutting-edge research on ππ΅π’π±π©πΊππ°π€π°π€π€πΆπ΄ π’πΆπ³π¦πΆπ΄ biofilm biology, infection dynamics, and host interactions, with a focus on mechanisms that drive persistence, immune evasion, and chronic disease.
Rikke Meyer (Aarhus University, Denmark) will discuss emergent roles of extracellular nucleic acids in staphylococcal biofilms; BalΓ‘zs Rada (The University of Georgia, USA) will present novel mechanisms underlying impaired π. π’πΆπ³π¦πΆπ΄ clearance by neutrophils in cystic fibrosis; Jeffrey L Bose (University of Kansas Medical Center, USA) will explore the diverse roles of fatty acids in π. π’πΆπ³π¦πΆπ΄ biology beyond membrane construction; Xiaogang Wang (Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine, USA) will reveal extracellular vesicles as a previously unrecognized component of π. π’πΆπ³π¦πΆπ΄ biofilms; and Lee Korshoj (University of Nebraska Medical Center, USA) will demonstrate how prokaryotic single-cell transcriptomics uncovers infection heterogeneity and immune evasion.
The session will be chaired by Jeffrey Freiberg, MD, PhD (Vanderbilt University Medical Center, USA), who will guide discussion and facilitate scientific exchange across perspectives on biofilm-associated infection and host responses.
Together, these talks provide an integrated view of biofilm formation, metabolic and immune interactions, and bacterial heterogeneity, offering critical insights into why ππ΅π’π±π©πΊππ°π€π°π€π€πΆπ΄ π’πΆπ³π¦πΆπ΄ infections persist and how they may be more effectively targeted.
