An insightful presentation by Associate Professor Bernadette Saunders on “Comparing Prognostic Biomarkers for Tuberculosis Diagnosis and Treatment Response.”
Associate Professor Saunders is a cellular immunologist at the University of Technology Sydney (UTS) and a Chief Investigator with the Centre for Research Excellence in Tuberculosis Control. Her research focuses on the interaction between macrophages and pathogens such as Mycobacterium tuberculosis, with particular interest in developing biomarkers for TB diagnosis and monitoring treatment responses.
Her research has investigated host-derived biomarkers, including plasma proteins and microRNAs, for identifying active tuberculosis and assessing changes associated with anti-mycobacterial treatment. Previous studies from her research group have examined biomarker signatures that could help distinguish active TB and support the monitoring of treatment response.
A current research direction led by Associate Professor Saunders includes developing a poly-signature biomarker to help predict relapse-free cure, reflecting the continuing effort to improve the clinical usefulness of biomarkers in tuberculosis.
Her presentation at Frontiers in TB & Mycobacteriology 2026 focuses on comparing prognostic biomarkers for TB diagnosis and treatment response, contributing to the broader scientific discussion on improved diagnosis, disease monitoring and patient outcomes.
