🔴 Day 2 Live Update
A thought-provoking presentation by Dr. Pere-Joan Cardona on “Coevolutionary Arms Race between Drosophila and Mycobacterium: Insights into the Impact of Host-directed Therapies.”
Dr. Pere-Joan Cardona is Chief of the Microbiology Department at Germans Trias i Pujol University Hospital and a professor at Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. He also leads the Experimental Tuberculosis Unit at the Germans Trias i Pujol Research Institute (IGTP), where his research focuses on tuberculosis pathogenesis, host–pathogen interactions, and the development of experimental models for TB research.
A significant part of this research uses Drosophila melanogaster as an experimental model to investigate mycobacterial infection and host responses. Recent work involving Cardona and colleagues has used Drosophila to study mycobacterial virulence and the factors influencing host resistance and tolerance to infection.
Cardona has also contributed to research on host-directed approaches for tuberculosis, including studies examining how modulation of host responses may complement conventional strategies for controlling TB.
The presentation brings together evolutionary biology, host–pathogen interactions and tuberculosis research, examining how the relationship between Drosophila and Mycobacterium can provide insights into host-directed therapeutic approaches.
The presentation is part of Session VI: Host-Pathogen Mechanisms on Day 2 of Frontiers in TB & Mycobacteriology 2026.
This conference is organized by Impact Research Communications (IRC)
