An insightful presentation by Dr. Stephen Carpenter on “Specificity and diversity of human CD4+ T cell responses to macrophages infected with Mycobacterium tuberculosis.”
Dr. Carpenter is an Assistant Professor in the Division of Infectious Diseases & HIV Medicine and the Department of Pathology at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. His research focuses on how human T cells and macrophages interact during infection with Mycobacterium tuberculosis, with particular interest in CD4+ T cell recognition of infected macrophages.
His research uses approaches including single-cell transcriptomics, surface receptor profiling and T cell receptor sequencing to investigate individual CD4+ T cell responses to M. tuberculosis-infected macrophages. These studies aim to identify T cell functions and antigen specificities that may help inform the development of protective TB vaccines.
Recent work from Dr. Carpenter and his collaborators has shown that human memory CD4+ T cells can respond differently depending on the type of macrophage infected with M. tuberculosis. Their research is helping to clarify how interactions between infected macrophages and CD4+ T cells influence immune recognition during tuberculosis infection.
His presentation at Frontiers in TB & Mycobacteriology 2026 focuses on the specificity and diversity of these human CD4+ T cell responses, contributing to a deeper understanding of host immunity and the cellular mechanisms relevant to TB vaccine development.
