🔴 Day 1 Live Update

An insightful presentation by Dr. Anna G. Green on “A frameshift mutation in the methyltransferase rlmN is associated with increased linezolid resistance in Mycobacterium tuberculosis.”

Dr. Green is affiliated with the Manning College of Information and Computer Sciences at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Her research applies computational and data-driven approaches to questions in antimicrobial resistance and tuberculosis research.

Her presentation examines a frameshift mutation in rlmN, a gene encoding an RNA methyltransferase in Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Research published by Bryn Marie Reimer and Anna G. Green found that this mutation was significantly associated with increased linezolid minimum inhibitory concentrations in a dataset of 7,436 M. tuberculosis isolates.

The study is particularly relevant because mutations in rrl and rplC have traditionally accounted for only part of the observed genetic basis of linezolid resistance in M. tuberculosis. The researchers identified the rlmN frameshift as an additional genetic factor associated with increased quantitative resistance and provided structural evidence suggesting that the mutation may affect RlmN function.

This presentation brings attention to the importance of identifying additional genetic factors associated with antimicrobial resistance and improving our understanding of the mechanisms underlying resistance in tuberculosis.
