We are honored to announce that Dr. Adrie Steyn, a member of the Africa Health Research Institute (AHRI) faculty and Head of a research laboratory at AHRI, as well as Professor of Microbiology at The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), USA, will be a featured speaker at the 2nd International Virtual Conference on Frontiers in TB & Mycobacteriology.

Prof. Steyn is an internationally recognized leader in tuberculosis pathogenesis and host–pathogen biology, with a strong focus on understanding how Mycobacterium tuberculosis behaves within the complex microenvironments of human tissues. He is also the Principal Investigator of the Global Research Resource for Human Tuberculosis (GRR-HTB), an innovative international platform that supports TB research by providing confidential, personalized, investigator-requested analyses of human TB tissue specimens, enabling researchers worldwide to access high-resolution insights into human TB disease.

In this presentation, Prof. Steyn will explore how a single M. tuberculosis infection can lead to remarkably diverse disease outcomes within different lesions in the same host. Drawing on cutting-edge research using human TB tissues, advanced imaging, and molecular profiling, he will highlight how heterogeneity in host immune responses and bacterial states shapes lesion-specific pathology, persistence, and treatment responses. His talk will emphasize how understanding lesion-level diversity can transform TB research and inform the development of more precise diagnostics, targeted therapies, and host-directed interventions.

Professor Steyn’s current research bridges human tissue biology, microbial physiology, and translational science, offering a powerful framework for redefining how we study TB in humans.
