This session at the 2nd International Virtual Conference on Staphylococci and Staphylococcal Infections (February 23–24, 2026) will focus on how 𝘚𝘵𝘢𝘱𝘩𝘺𝘭𝘰𝘤𝘰𝘤𝘤𝘶𝘴 𝘢𝘶𝘳𝘦𝘶𝘴 survives within host cells, interacts with immune defenses, and adapts to hostile host environments, processes central to chronic infection and treatment failure.
Jérôme Josse (Université Claude Bernard Lyon 1, France) will discuss intraosteoblastic 𝘚𝘵𝘢𝘱𝘩𝘺𝘭𝘰𝘤𝘰𝘤𝘤𝘶𝘴 𝘢𝘶𝘳𝘦𝘶𝘴 and its role in antibiotic tolerance; Silva Holtfreter (Universitätsmedizin Greifswald, Germany) will present findings on Th17-driven immune responses triggered by persistent colonization in mouse models; M. Brittany Johnson (University of North Carolina at Charlotte, USA) will explore how cytosolic nucleic acid sensors in bone cells initiate protective responses during osteomyelitis; and Will Beavers (Louisiana State University, USA) will examine how the electron transport chain modulates 𝘚. 𝘢𝘶𝘳𝘦𝘶𝘴 sensitivity to polyunsaturated fatty acids.
The session will be chaired by Megan Kiedrowski (University of Alabama at Birmingham, AL, USA), who will guide the discussion and foster scientific exchange across presentations focused on intracellular persistence and host–pathogen interactions.
Together, these talks provide an integrated view of intracellular persistence, immune sensing, and metabolic adaptation, highlighting how host–pathogen interactions shape infection outcomes and influence therapeutic success.
