An insightful presentation by Dr. Céline Cougoule on “Innovative Human Systems for Mycobacteria Infection Modelling and Drug Testing.”
Dr. Cougoule is a researcher at the Institut de Pharmacologie et de Biologie Structurale (IPBS), CNRS, Université de Toulouse, France, with research interests spanning macrophage biology, cellular immunology, infectious diseases and tuberculosis.
Her recent work has focused on human-relevant models for studying mycobacterial infections. In a 2026 review published in The FEBS Journal, Dr. Cougoule and colleagues examined the use of lung organoids as human systems for modelling Mycobacteria infection and testing therapeutic compounds. The work highlights the value of lung organoids for investigating host–pathogen interactions and evaluating potential treatments in more physiologically relevant systems.
These models can help researchers study how mycobacteria interact with human lung cells and provide complementary systems for evaluating therapeutic approaches. The research also considers applications to both tuberculosis and nontuberculous mycobacterial infections.
Dr. Cougoule is also involved in research on Mycobacterium abscessus, including the MabsCAMP project, which investigates cAMP signalling, stress adaptation, biofilm formation and antibiotic tolerance using approaches that include infection models such as macrophages, airway organoids and zebrafish.
Her presentation brings attention to the growing role of human-relevant experimental systems in mycobacterial research, supporting more detailed studies of infection biology and the evaluation of potential therapeutic strategies.
