An insightful presentation by Dr. Joel S. Freundlich on “Recent Advances in Targeting Mycobacterium tuberculosis KasA.”
Dr. Freundlich is a Professor in the Department of Pharmacology, Physiology, and Neuroscience at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School and is also affiliated with the Center for Emerging and Re-emerging Pathogens. His research brings together computation, chemistry, and biology to support the discovery of therapeutic strategies for infectious diseases, including Mycobacterium tuberculosis.
KasA is an enzyme involved in the fatty-acid biosynthesis pathway of Mycobacterium tuberculosis and has been investigated as a potential target for new antituberculosis compounds. Research involving Dr. Freundlich and collaborators has included structure-based inhibitor design and the development of preclinical candidates targeting KasA.
The presentation highlights recent advances in this area of TB drug discovery, focusing on efforts to identify and develop compounds that can target KasA. Research from the Rutgers team has included JSF-3285, a novel KasA inhibitor investigated for its potential against tuberculosis.
