2nd International Virtual Conference on Frontiers in TB & Mycobacteriology
The complexity of tuberculosis lies in the dynamic and multifaceted interactions between Mycobacterium tuberculosis and its host. This session brings together leading international researchers to explore host–pathogen mechanisms spanning molecular microbiology, immunology, evolutionary biology, and translational science.
Dr. Zhang Tianyu (Guangzhou Laboratory, China) will present advances in understanding synergistic lethal mechanisms in mycobacteria, offering insights into coordinated bacterial killing strategies. Dr. Celine Cougoule (CNRS, France) will highlight innovative human-based infection models that enhance translational relevance in TB research and drug testing. Dr. Lucas Boeck (University of Basel, Switzerland) will examine determinants of antibiotic killing and the physiological consequences for mycobacterial populations.
Focusing on tissue-level complexity, Prof. Adrie Steyn (Africa Health Research Institute (AHRI), South Africa) will discuss how a single infection can lead to diverse outcomes across human TB lesions. Dr. Amy Barczak (Ragon Institute of Mass General Brigham, MIT, and Harvard, USA) will explore the phagosomal membrane as a critical battleground determining Mtb containment or escape. Dr. Pere-Joan Cardona (Institut Català de la Salut | Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, Spain) will provide evolutionary insights into host–mycobacterium interactions and implications for host-directed therapies.
Adding genetic and immunoregulatory perspectives, Dr. Howard Takiff (Venezuelan Institute for Scientific Research, Venezuela) will examine the role of ESX-3 and PE-PGRS genes in iron acquisition and macrophage survival, while Dr. Smriti Mehra (Texas Biomedical Research Institute, USA) will discuss how indoleamine dioxygenase modulates immune responses and contributes to host and pathogen heterogeneity in TB.
Together, this session offers a comprehensive perspective on how host–pathogen interactions drive TB pathogenesis, persistence, and treatment responses, advancing the scientific foundation for innovative therapeutics and host-directed strategies.
