TB–HIV co-infection continues to drive morbidity and mortality worldwide, demanding deeper insight into immune interactions, treatment outcomes, and transmission dynamics. This session brings together leading experts to explore how advances in immunology and genomic epidemiology are reshaping our understanding of TB–HIV pathogenesis and public health control strategies.
Dr. Deepak Kaushal (Texas Biomedical Research Institute, USA) will present findings showing that while concurrent TB and HIV therapies can suppress TB reactivation, they do not fully resolve chronic immune activation, highlighting the urgent need for host-directed therapeutic strategies in co-infected individuals. Dr. Johannes Nemeth (Universitätsspital Zürich, Switzerland) will provide novel insights into the bidirectional immunological and clinical interactions between TB and HIV, with implications for integrated patient management. Complementing these clinical and immunological perspectives, Dr. Richard Anthony (RIVM National Institute for Public Health and the Environment, Netherlands) will discuss how whole genome sequencing is advancing precision epidemiology, enabling detailed analysis of clustered TB cases while addressing the complexities of interpreting large genomic datasets.
