Progress toward effective TB control depends on advancing vaccines, understanding protective immunity, and identifying robust biomarkers. This session brings together leading international researchers to explore how immunological insights and translational science are shaping the next generation of TB prevention and diagnostic strategies.
Prof. Bavesh Kana (University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa) will discuss how targeting peptidoglycan amidation can inform rational engineering of improved TB vaccines. Dr. Esther Julián Gómez (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, Spain) will highlight structural determinants that drive immune modulation in mycobacteria-based immunotherapies. Prof. Hazel Dockrell (London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, U. of London, UK) will address the urgent need for validated human biomarkers that serve as correlates of protection in TB vaccine trials.
Further insights will be shared by Dr. Steve Carpenter, MD, PhD (Case Western Reserve University, USA), who will explore the specificity and diversity of human CD4⁺ T cell responses to Mycobacterium tuberculosis-infected macrophages, and Dr. Bernadette Saunders (University of Technology Sydney, Australia), who will compare prognostic biomarkers for TB diagnosis and treatment response across diverse settings.
Together, this session underscores how integrating vaccine biology, immune profiling, and biomarker validation is essential for accelerating TB vaccine development, improving patient stratification, and advancing precision approaches to tuberculosis prevention and care.
