We are pleased to announce Dr. Pere-Joan Cardona Iglesias, Chief of the Microbiology Department at Germans Trias i Pujol University Hospital and Professor at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, as a featured speaker at the 2nd International Virtual Conference on Frontiers in TB & Mycobacteriology, taking place online (Eastern Time, USA) on March 2–3, 2026.
In his talk, Prof. Cardona will discuss how the immune response in Drosophila and the adaptive strategies of Mycobacterium illuminate key host–pathogen dynamics. He will highlight how these models help identify vulnerabilities that can be targeted through host-directed therapies, offering new perspectives for improving TB treatment outcomes.
Prof. Pere Joan Cardona is a leading clinical microbiologist whose work has advanced understanding of latent TB infection and its progression to active disease. As founder of the Experimental Tuberculosis Unit at IGTP, he has developed influential in vivo and in silico models, contributed to the RUTI therapeutic vaccine, and pioneered host-directed therapy research. He brings extensive clinical trial experience and active collaboration with global TB research consortia. His current interests also include molecular epidemiology, microbiome characterization, improved STD screening, and expanding Drosophila infection models to study additional pathogens.
