Secretion Systems, Molecular Interactions, and Virulence Regulation

This session at the 2nd International Virtual Conference on Staphylococci and Staphylococcal Infections (February 23–24, 2026) will explore the molecular mechanisms that govern Staphylococcus aureus virulence, adaptation, and interaction with both host and microbial partners.

Meera Unnikrishnan (University of Warwick, United Kingdom) will discuss Type VII secretion systems and how they modulate host–staphylococcal interactions; Shaun R. Brinsmade (Georgetown University, USA) will present insights into metabolic synergy between 𝘚𝘵𝘢𝘱𝘩𝘺𝘭𝘰𝘤𝘰𝘤𝘤𝘶𝘴 𝘢𝘶𝘳𝘦𝘶𝘴 and Enterococcus faecalis during polymicrobial infection; Romain Guerillot (University of Melbourne, Australia) will examine how simple sequence repeats drive evolvability and adaptive tracking in 𝘚. 𝘢𝘶𝘳𝘦𝘶𝘴; and Abdou Hachani (University of Melbourne, Australia) will showcase integrated multi-omics approaches to understand 𝘚. 𝘢𝘶𝘳𝘦𝘶𝘴 responses to human serum.

The session will be chaired by Julia Sharp, PhD (Old Dominion University, VA, USA), who will guide discussion and foster scientific exchange across presentations focused on secretion systems, molecular interactions, and virulence regulation.

Together, these talks provide a comprehensive view of how secretion systems, genetic variability, metabolic interactions, and systems-level responses shape 𝘚𝘵𝘢𝘱𝘩𝘺𝘭𝘰𝘤𝘰𝘤𝘤𝘶𝘴 𝘢𝘶𝘳𝘦𝘶𝘴 pathogenicity and adaptation.
