An insightful presentation by Dr. Amy Barczak on “Mtb Containment or Escape: A Dynamic Battle at the Phagosomal Membrane.”
Dr. Barczak is an Associate Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School, Director of Research in the Division of Infectious Diseases at Massachusetts General Hospital, and a member of the Ragon Institute of Mass General Brigham, MIT and Harvard. Her research focuses on the molecular pathogenesis of Mycobacterium tuberculosis and the mechanisms that enable Mtb to survive within host cells.
A central focus of the Barczak laboratory is the interaction between Mtb and infected macrophages. The laboratory investigates how mycobacterial virulence factors affect host cells, with particular attention to damage and repair of the phagosomal membrane, the cellular compartment in which Mtb initially resides after being taken up by macrophages.
Phagosomal membrane damage is an important aspect of Mtb pathogenesis. Understanding how this damage occurs, how host cells respond to it, and how Mtb benefits from or is constrained by these processes can provide deeper insight into the host–pathogen interface.
Dr. Barczak’s presentation brings this cellular battle into focus, examining the mechanisms that influence whether Mtb is contained within host cells or gains advantages that support its survival.
The presentation is part of Day 2’s Host-Pathogen Mechanisms session at Frontiers in TB & Mycobacteriology 2026, contributing to discussions on tuberculosis pathogenesis, host–pathogen interactions and the cellular mechanisms underlying Mtb infection.
