An insightful presentation by Dr. Adrie JC Steyn on “One Infection, Many Outcomes: Host-Pathogen Interactions across Human TB Lesions.”
Prof. Adrie Steyn is a faculty member at the Africa Health Research Institute (AHRI) and also maintains a research programme at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). His research focuses on Mycobacterium tuberculosis virulence and persistence, host-pathogen interactions, and the biological mechanisms that influence tuberculosis disease.
A major area of his research is understanding how M. tuberculosis adapts to the changing environments encountered during infection. His work has examined bacterial redox biology, host-derived stresses and metabolic processes that influence M. tuberculosis persistence and pathogenesis.
Human TB lesions provide an important setting for studying these interactions because the conditions encountered by M. tuberculosis can vary considerably within infected tissue. Research involving Dr. Steyn has examined the spatial distribution of M. tuberculosis and bacterial products within human TB lesions, contributing to a better understanding of the relationship between the pathogen and its tissue environment.
The presentation addresses this complexity through the theme of “one infection, many outcomes,” highlighting how differences within human TB lesions can shape host-pathogen interactions and disease biology.
Dr. Steyn’s presentation is part of Session VI: Host-Pathogen Mechanisms on Day 2 of Frontiers in TB & Mycobacteriology 2026, contributing to scientific discussions on TB pathogenesis, host responses and the biological diversity observed during tuberculosis infection.
