Host and Microbial Factors Regulating Staphylococcus aureus Aggregation in the Airways

🔴 One of the featured scientific sessions at the 2nd International Virtual Conference on Staphylococci and Staphylococcal Infections 2026 featured Dr. Megan Kiedrowski from the University of Alabama at Birmingham (USA), who presented an insightful lecture on the host and microbial factors regulating Staphylococcus aureus aggregation in the airways.

Respiratory infections caused by Staphylococcus aureus remain a major clinical challenge, particularly in individuals with chronic airway diseases such as cystic fibrosis and chronic rhinosinusitis. Within the respiratory tract, S. aureus frequently forms multicellular aggregates rather than existing as free-floating bacteria. These bacterial communities can enhance persistence, reduce susceptibility to antimicrobial treatment, and alter interactions with host immune defenses, contributing to chronic infection and disease progression. Understanding the biological mechanisms that regulate bacterial aggregation is therefore essential for developing more effective therapeutic strategies.

During her presentation, Dr. Kiedrowski discussed how both host-derived factors and bacterial regulatory mechanisms influence S. aureus aggregation within the airway environment. The presentation highlighted the complex interplay between airway epithelial cells, the respiratory microenvironment, and bacterial adaptation, demonstrating how conditions within the host can shape bacterial behavior and persistence. These studies provide valuable insight into the earliest events that promote chronic respiratory colonization and infection.

Dr. Kiedrowski’s laboratory focuses on understanding host–microbe interactions in chronic respiratory diseases by using advanced airway epithelial co-culture models and clinically relevant infection systems. Her research investigates how airway conditions, polymicrobial communities, and host responses influence S. aureus survival, aggregation, antimicrobial tolerance, and disease outcomes. This work is helping researchers better understand why chronic respiratory infections remain difficult to eradicate and where new therapeutic opportunities may emerge.

The presentation generated considerable interest among conference participants, emphasizing the growing importance of studying bacterial aggregation as a distinct biological process that contributes to persistence, immune evasion, and chronic airway disease. As research continues to reveal the molecular mechanisms governing these interactions, new opportunities may emerge for preventing persistent S. aureus infections and improving patient outcomes.
